After much thought and with pain in our hearts we decided to cancel this year’s Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Law Enforcement Memorial. The wreaths had been purchased – so they were placed at the Memorial on the 19th of December with a prayer and a salute of thanks. 2008 gave us weather complications… 2009 brought bone chilling temperatures, rain and heavy hearts with the loss of the four Lakewood officers. We will honor the lives of the officers lost in 2009 at our May Medal of Honor Peace Officers Memorial Ceremony.

The weather was cool – but great for our 3rd Annual IAWP – Behind the Badge Foundation 5k Walk-Run! (Run with the Cops, Not from Them) held June 20, 2009. This year we assigned numbers and were able to chip time the event. (requested by our serious participants!)
We thank Beth Lavin and the 2009 IAWP International Conference Committee for all their hard work. Over $7300 was raised with the proceeds benefiting Behind the Badge Foundation and the 2009 Conference.

Some even came dressed as caped crusaders!
May 8, 2009 - The day was cool and breezy – warming a bit as the ceremony began. Honor Guard members from around the state and Canada participated, adding honors due our fallen heroes.
2009 Additions to the Roll Call of Honor:
Sgt. Nelson Ng, Ellensburg PD — e.o.w.: August 15, 2008
Deputy Anne Jackson, Skagit County SO — e.o.w.: September 2, 2008
Officer Kristine Fairbanks, US Forest Service — e.o.w.: September 20, 2008
Their duty was to serve. Our duty is to remember.
The Behind the Badge Foundation Memorial Committee co-hosted the ceremony with the Washington State Medal of Honor Committee, combining two ceremonies to honor those who serve, protect and paid the ultimate sacrifice.
Our 11th annual Law Enforcement Memorial Ball and Auction was held April 4, 2009 at the Seattle Hilton Airport and Conference Center. We honor our fallen, remember their families and their agencies as we make new friends and renew old acquaintances.
Yes, the goal was to raise funds benefiting Behind the Badge Foundation – but our committee was also dedicated to create an evening of fun and friendship. And, yes… we met both goals!
A multi-agency Honor Guard presented the Colors and escorted honored guests to their tables. Our guests enjoyed a live and a silent auction; they were entertained by the Vancouver, BC Police Pipe and Drum Band and the Washington State Patrol Rifle Team. We also enjoyed dancing to the music of “T n T”.
The BtBF Ball and Auction Committee was tireless in their efforts to create a memorable evening for our guests. We can’t thank them enough.
We look forward to seeing you at our 2010 Law Enforcement Memorial Ball and Auction!
